Cavallero - Review - 300 Smith Street, Collingwood VIC 3066

I know I'm here yet again (Smith St, that is) but I'm only human. We all have our favourite places. Well, Cavallero certainly makes a striking appearance as you walk past.  It begs you to come in.  It looks old school with its iron grill fronting that also adds a bit of class.  The very very high ceiling also makes for a nice open air space.

The bubble n squeak, cabbage, lentil, potato rosti with crispy bacon, fried egg and tomato relish look quite mechanical on the plate.  Its nice but kind of sterile looking at the same time.

The select cold meat platter is better but symmetry to the plating lacks character.  A bit of unevenness or something would just make it look more appealing to eat.  There is nothing wrong with the food per se but nothing stands out either.
Cavallero itself does make an impression and you can see how it can be a magnet for passerby customers.  It just looks kind of cool.  A venus fly trap for humans?
Yes, Cavallero does make a visual impression but at the end of the day, eye candy and style should not take a back seat to the food itself.

To me it felt like the food was a bit underwhelming given perhaps my unfair expectations.
