Mezzo - Review - Little Bourke St, Melbournce CBD

Mezzo (35 Little Bourke St, Melbourne, VIC 3000)  seems to specialise in pre-theatre and mediterranean  food.  It's kind of special in feeling without reaching the heights of a true cool or fine dining establishment.  It's kind of a tier below but its pricing reflects this so all round its a nice combination.

A touch of old school

Located between Spring and Exhibition Street I am sure that frequent theatre goers will have come here a few times. It's nice without the super high price tag.
I thought that the customer service was really good at Mezzo.  This makes such a difference to a dining experience that it often gets overlooked.  I was happy.
The ubiquitous fresh bread with olive oil is always a nice way to begin a meal.  While Mezzo's version probably doesn't have a spectacular look as far as bread goes bread is bread so to speak.
Too be honest my memory is a bit cloudy regarding the entree above.  However, we all know we remember the exceptional and bad so I'd say it was good.  It probably could be made to look a bit better on then plate but that is being picky.
Beef ragu
Beef ragu is quite popular these days on the cooking shows.  I get the feeling in days gone by people weren't so impressed to see this on a restaurant menu.  As long as the flavour is good and the meat tender I am a happy customer.  I'd say that the Mezzo version could do with a bit more flavour.
Pan fried Salmon
Pan-fried salmon is losing its allure these days.  I am sad to sound a bit jaded by it all but it is such a regular on the menu board that it is hard to get excited by it.  What I liked about Mezzo is that they have injected a bit of creativity in how it is served up.  You can see from above that they have put some effort into this dish to make it something special.

We all love a dessert and the cannoli pastry shells filled with ricotta and candied fruit fits in nicely with the mediterranean theme.

Okay, while I haven't exactly been shouting "go here go here" I like Mezzo.  The menu is varied by modern standards so you should be able to find something a bit different, its attractive, in a central'ish location and the pricing is fair.  Check out the Mezzo website for more information if you are interested.
