Nam Loong - Review - Chinatown

Melbourne is home to one of the best if not the best Chinatown in Australia. As with all places trying to select a Chinese restaurant is a bit of a random choice. They often all look kind of the same and we all know about those basic looking restaurants with food to match.

Anyway, Nam Loong is one of my favourite basic Chinese restaurants. It specialises in Chinese buns, particularly the bbq pork but you can get everything there. People do queue up for them so that is always a good sign.

This is one of those classic restaurants in  the sense that the quality of food is everything and the surroundings and decor definitely come second best. They have updated the electronic menu above the counter and it does look impressive by most Chinese restaurants of this ilk.

Anyway my favourite dish if Chinese roast pork with tofu with vegetables and rice. It's classic Cantonese. They kind of only give you the left over bits of roast pork as that's reserved for those who order the roast pork on rice. Its a bit of a pity but it hasn't stopped me ordering this many times. A satisfied customer many times over.

Another dish sampled was the fried sichuan fish with veges. Probably not as satisfying but good all the same. Always nice to try something a bit spicy.

And finally a peanut pancake. Typically Asian rather than a european styled pancake. Good for what it is but  combined with fresh cream or ice cream this would make a great little dessert. As it is its still nice but could be elevated to a higher level.

Back to the basics, the food selection covers Cantonese and sichuan with some nods to Korean  and even Japanese. It predominantly though is traditional Chinese. The surroundings a basic, think student'ish but the food quality is higher than some others lurking around Chinatown.
