Russo Estate in Diggers Rest (760-818 Holden Road, Diggers Rest Victoria) is probably off the beaten track for some. However, if you live around Werribee or Caroline Springs it's actually very close. Anyway, around Diggers Rest is a hidden wine area in Melbourne. I talked to the proprietor and rather than work together like say the Yarra Valley or Red Hill they compete among themselves. It's a bit sad as they could all help each other.
Anyway, I have been to Russo Estate multiple times so it goes without saying that I recommend the place. They have all sorts of things going on and even have glamping if you want a glamour drinking and food experience.
The food at Russo Estate is contemporary modern and they do try to make it look attractive - always a good thing. They do make some interesting cooking choices to keep things fresh but personally they do not always come off. They do aim for fantastic quality so that's more of a personal preference thing than any slight on Russo Estate.
It's of course a great place to try wine while you are here. The surrounds are lovely and it's an opportunity to chat to the wine makers and maybe fine something that you really take to.
Hopefully you can tell that everything is pretty much presented immaculately. It does feel a bit special when you come here. That's a great thing about dining at wineries - it's an experience.
Russo Estate is a great place to take friends if you have visitors or are looking for something different. You can get that holiday experience without having to drive to the ends of the earth (if you live in western Melbourne). Just writing this review makes me feel like going back.
Another great thing about Russo Estate is it won't break the break. No it's not supercheap and I wouldn't expect it to be. However, for the great quality and service they provide you come away feeling satisfied.
