Dong Ba - Review - Footscray

Dong Ba Vietnamese Noodle House (133 Hopkins St, Footscray VIC 3011) is one of many Vietnamese restaurants in Footscray.  While a few are moving a bit more upmarket, Dong Ba is pretty traditional in styling and its menu.

Dong Ba Vietnamese rice paper rolls

Vietnamese rice paper rolls are one of my favourites and of course you can get them at Dong Ba.  You are going to be hard pressed to ever find a rice paper roll and go wow that's fantastic. It's more of a case that they generally are good.  It's no exception here.  I was certainly happy enough with the rice paper rolls here at Dong Ba.

As far as standing out from the crowd, Dong Ba isn't going to win any prizes.  It pretty generic and plain but equally I have nothing to complain about.

As far as the menu goes, Dong Ba is pretty restrictive.  If you love your pho (Vietnamese noodles) you'll be sorted and it has some of the other typical Vietnamese dishes.  However, if you're thinking that you might want something different you'd best stay clear of Dong Ba.  It's best to think of Dong Ba as a noodle house.

Beef special pho

Beef special pho is a favourite of mine.  I'm almost suffering from a obsessive compulsive disorder as I nearly always order this.  It really has become an old favourite of mine.  Beef special pho probably isn't for the faint of heart or the more adventurous person.  If you like tripe or beef cartilage you might like to give it a go but otherwise there are other more traditional noodle dishes on offer.

And for me, another favourite is the avocado shake.  Okay, it may seem a strange combination but don't knock it until you've tried one.  This really is a bit of a stunner of a drink.  That's stunning in a good way.

In a nutshell, there are better Vietnamese restaurants in Footscray.  It's charm is essentially that it is old school.  If you want a standard Vietnamese Pho, Dong Ba has you covered but if you are looking for something more look elsewhere.


If you are feeling for something traditional or dare I say it basic, give Dong Ba a go.  It's traditional in a nice way.
