Happy River Cafe - Review - Footscray

The Happy River Cafe is probably unknown to most including many who live in Footscray itself. Now this is sure to be a growth area given its proximity to Melbourne CBD and being on the Maribyrnong river.  The Happy River Cafe happens to be located next to the Footscray Community Arts Centre so its a perfect place to take in the local art gallery and grab a bite to eat.  A few minutes walk behind the cafe and you can take a pleasant walk along the Maribyrnong river.

Fortunately the Happy River River has a bit of character.  Some cafes next to so-called points of interest tend to bland functional places.  Anyway, while the Happy River Cafe does elevate itself above the run of the mill I still wish it had a little more charm. That's my opinion so don't be put off.  In fact I'd say this is a perfect cafe for those with children and it really seems to cater for that type of crowd.

Anyway, the Scottish fish cakes were great.  A bit different from standard fare and the ubiquitous Thai fish cakes. They make not look that appealing but come highly recommended.  The scrambled eggs with salmon hardly comes across as adventurous breakfast fare but then again how many breakfast/brunch menus really stand out.  After all we all want to enjoy our favourites.

A coffee and muffin with obligatory butter is truly comfort food and in winter we all deserve a bit of a treat.
