Cafe 1884 at 24 Little Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000 is at the top end of Little Bourke St. You may have passed by and not even noticed they exist. Due to local authority restrictions branding is an issue for them unfortunately.
Cafe 1884 has a good range of healthy styled salads and a scattered mix other cafe food. The food is all keenly priced so it is perfect for the city worker or budget traveler.
I don't think the food seems to follow a unified style so its hard for me and perhaps even for them to describe their style or target audience. This might be a bit of a problem for them.
I have talked to the proprietor personally and I know she is a nice person and has a positive personality. Melbourne is a tough food market and while I know she means well I believe they are going to have to focus on branding or a unique selling point if they are to survive.
They offer standard cafe fare such as a big breakfast or eggs florentine and mix this up with their very healthy looking salads and cakes. Yes, they do like to mix it up!
What they do have going for them is a library-esque, cavernish side room and nice interior courtyard. While it could probably be styled in some trendy way I think you can probably see some of its potential.
As it stands right now, Cafe 1884 is a well meaning cafe with a bit of un-fulfilled potential. The street frontage works against them and they do not present a unified image let alone a cool or trendy one.
However, the food is generally nice, some of it will appeal to the health conscious and it is pretty budget priced. If you feel like a nice coffee or lunch combined with a bit of peace and quiet, Cafe 1884 might be right up your alley. It's also perfect for the budget traveler.
