Oppa (271 Swanston St Melbourne, VIC 3000) is a very new and very popular Korean restaurant on Swanston Street. Don't be surprised by queues outside although queues seem to be more and more commonplace on Swanston Street and this is even with a seemingless endless supply of restaurants.
Oppa is a small Korean inspired restaurant. I guess you could say it is street food based and caters predominantly for students. This I guess is based on price, proximity to all the Asian filled apartments and location. Design wise it is pretty upmarket and looks interesting if you happen to be walking past.
Korean fried chicken is kind of standard food now days. A few years ago a Korean restaurant wasn't very common. Now days, they are not quite everywhere but they are still plentiful. Variety they say is the spice of life and I am not complaining.
As far as Korean fried chicken goes, Oppa does not stand out.
Oppa is kind of like a Korean version of a classic Chinese takeaway but with far superior surrounding, modern presentation of the food and good but not mind blowing tasting food.
Generally speaking you are selecting a one person dish that isn't really designed for sharing. However, there is a small selection of side and light dishes such as fried rice cake, kimchi dumplings, seaweed rolls and some salads.
Bibimbap is a classic dish you'll find at almost all Korean restaurants. It essentially a bowl of warm rice topped with sauteed vegetables with chilli paste and other seasonings.
Bulgogi is another Korean classic with my favourite being with pork. It is generally meat marinated with soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic and pepper combined with ginger and onions. The common way to cook bulgogi is by grilling although pan frying is also common.
While the food at Oppa does not really stand out as being outstanding I still recommend it as I like the general overall standard of the food, its presentation and Oppa's surroundings. It's just a pleasant dining experience for this type of food. Enjoy.

Worth a visit to try it out. Not one of the best Korean around but not bad either.
