Kim Chi Lunchbox - Review - Hawthorn

I don't go to Hawthorn very much if ever really but I wanted to check out the Sunday market.  Well the market was a bit of a letdown but everyone has their own interests so they may like it more than me.  Anyway, being right next to Swinburne University does have its advantages so if you want Japanese, Indian or Chinese you are well catered for near the university.  That usually means average quality but I can report that Kim Chi Lunchbox is easily above this level and is arguably one of the best restaurants in the category,ie, that serves cheapish food primarily for budget diners, think students.  I think it outdoes the majority of these kinds of places in all of Melbourne Chinatown and most of the city.

If you like Korean you have probably had a bi bim bap.  My favourite is the pork bi bim bap but maybe that's my Chinese heritage speaking.  Anyway, its kind of spicy, tasty pork (but not hot) with chinese mushroom, beansprouts, thinly sliced courgettes, brown sugar, honey, sesame seeds served with boiled rice.  Its essentially a very tasty dish that is Asian but doesn't taste like other Chinese, Japanese or Vietnamese cuisine.  All I can say is that the quality of the food here is truly outstanding.  If you like Asian or Korean food I highly recommend coming here.

 The other main was a chicken bi bim bap. Again no complaints here. The quality is simply excellent. If you happen to be around here please pay them a visit. I think you'll leave very satisfied.
