Once upon a time there were not many Japanese restaurants to be found. Nowadays while certainly outnumbered by Chinese restaurants there are still many to be discovered. In fact you'll find them in most high streets. They also seem to come into two distinct groups. There are the sushi and noodle bars similar to the generic Chinese takeaways and there are those with a more substantial menu selection and with more unique offerings.
Kuni's fits into the second group. Its not really as upmarket as you would expect given where its located but its what I call a pleasant experience. Nice, modern, good central location (near Chinatown) and fast and attentive service, almost too attentive in fact.
This is going to be one of my semi lazy posts so you'll have to enjoy the photographs. I do enjoy the little side dishes but the beansprouts were too pickled, ie, too sour. However the edamame, kind of par-boiled soy beans coated in a light dusting of salt and where you eat only in internal beans are tasty and enjoyable. Definitely worth trying if you've never had them.
Today I was very boring and went for tempura served as a main. Hardly exciting I know but sometimes you just feel like something and can't go without.
Along with this the baby kingfish certainly sounded nice but was in fact only average. Maybe my expectations were too high.
And finally off the specials menu was a eggplant with minced pork kind of lightly deepfried with a very light soy sauce. I'm probably missing a few ingredients on this final dish but this was a highlight and probably made the visit worthwhile.
This is a moderately priced restaurant so if you happen to be in Chinatown (the Spring Street end) and crave some Japanese its worth a visit. However, I would be hard pressed to place it in the 'special' category.
