Lets face it - it's always great being on holiday. So off to Echuca near the Victorian/New South Wales border. It's home to the famous Murray River and the not so famous Campaspe River. More importantly it houses many of the historical paddle steamers that still plough their trade although now its to ferry tourists up and down the Murray.
Of course when you're on holiday you are looking to enjoy your dining experience so I ventured to the 'Star Hotel'. There is a courtyard out the back or front depending on how you enter the premises. It's got your typical pub menu and about average pub quality. By this I mean its neither spectacular or miserable.
The interior is attractive, open and modern. Its a bit dark when you know there is glorious sunshine outside but not dark in the dingy sense. It's definitely a nice bar to have a drink and the entrance closest to the Murray River will cater for large groups very easily if you've got a big party.
So soup of the day it was coupled with the salt and pepper calamari. The calamari was a bit disappointing being a bit too cold and not as crisp as I would have liked but the soup had an original flavour that elevated it too above average. Some middle eastern or northern African spices made all the difference.
