New Taipei - Restaurant Review - Swanston Street

New Taipei is a Taiwanese restaurant on Swanston Street with a specialty in dumplings and noodles.

I guess being Taiwanese is a point of difference in the very crowded Asian restaurant sector in CBD, Melbourne. Chinatown these days comprises two parts, the traditional part on Lt Bourke Street and the new growing part on Elizabeth Street between Lonsdale Street and heading towards Queen Victoria Market.  And then you have Asian restaurants in between on Swanston Street and connecting streets.

New Taipei philosophy

I have never been to Taipei so I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the food.  However, compared to other Chinese food it isn't too different.

I don't think most people will be wowed by the food at New Taipei.  It's kind of workmanlike.  It's neither really bad and conversely not likely to get you too excited either.  Dare I say it fills the gap (in your stomach) and that's it.  This is not a slight as it's not bad just not exciting in any way.

Fried chicken

I guess you'd call New Taipei one of those in and out eateries.  It's more a place for lunch or inexpensive dinner.  It's definitely not aiming for fine dining clientele much like most Asian restaurants so keep your expectations in check.  It you are thinking about groups it might be fine for a group of four friends, student groups or a place for a feed after a night out.

Dumpling

So all up New Taipei is okay.  Neither good nor bad.  It really does literally fill the gap and that's about it.
