Neuvo 37 in South Wharf looks quite grand. With a location just off the Yarra River on Southbank and a quite glorious view of the city (see below) if you can get the right seating (first impressions are pretty good). But are looks deceiving? Keep reading and find out.
Lets face it. If you love oysters you love oysters. Anyway, as you can see below, the oysters come out and look pretty good but not spectacularly so. They are in general terms a bit disappointing.
Well are you good at guessing games? I'm not and since I do not make notes I really am at a loss to what the next few dishes are.
To cut to the chase, Neuvo 37 seems to have delusions of grandeur. It has a really nice setting, the interior design and scale give it some probably undeserved gravitas and the presentation of the dishes is modern, sleek and contemporary.
However, collectively things just do not add up. Unfortunately, some of the dishes just don't meet your expectations. Neuvo 37 feels like it is trying hard to be a finedining restaurant but the quality just doesn't quite high enough.
The organic pork cutlet is really quite underwhelming. It just comes out literally by itself and being organic doesn't mean it automatically gets elevated to a higher level. It's just to plain for the asking price.
At Neuvo 37 it is quite plain to see that the mains are designed to be topped up with side dishes. There is nothing wrong with this and I'd even say, why not, but the mains still should at least have a bit more visual interest and substance to them than they currently have.
The desserts are really the shining light at Neuvo 37. If you only came here after a night out, ordered a dessert and had a nice glass of wine you would probably rave about Neuvo 37.
The desserts were really very good. In many ways they well and truly shamed the main courses to such a degree you would almost think they were from a totally different restaurant.
