Lamaro's Bodega - Review - Port Melbourne

Lamaro's Bodega restaurant review, Port Melbourne by Howie's Melbourne Food Blog Lamaro's Bodega is a Spanish styled restaurant in Port Melbourne (273-279 Cecil St, South Melbourne VIC 3205).  It's great having a few different options available and in general terms there aren't many specialist Spanish or South American restaurants around the place in Melbourne.

Lamaro's Bodega is styled a bit on the dark side for my tastes.  Perfectly suitable for Melbourne's winter months but at other times of the year it's going to feel a bit dreary.

Interior

You can probably understand what I mean by glancing at the photo above.  You can tell Lamaro's Bodega do care about appearances but there is definitely room for a bit of a contemporary update.

The presentation of the food I believe is intentioned to be rustic looking.  Nothing wrong with that and in a suitably styled restaurant it would work perfectly.  However, at Lamaro's Bodega it kind of clashes with the general look of the restaurant and it comes across in my eyes as more Japanese looking than rustic.

Food

In general, I found the food at Lamaro's Bodega to be okay.  It may sound a bit harsh but really it felt pretty workman like and didn't sparkle or make you think, wow, I really enjoyed that.

Beef

Maybe I'm not in tune with my inner Spanish heart but it all felt a bit underwhelming to me.  I want to like Lamaro's Bodega as it does have some real good concepts and I can tell they are trying. It just doesn't come together as a whole.

Veges

The meat platter is a bit unexciting to look at.  I don't know how, but there must be some way to make it look a bit more attractive.
Cured meats

A classic dish of mussels isn't too bad.  It's kind of an old faithful kind of dish these days.  Nothing to complain about here and overall it's pretty nice.

Mussels

It is what it is but doesn't look particularly attractive to eat.  This is kind of seared steak but if you get my drift it essentially looks underwhelming and actually unattractive.  It tasted okay but certainly isn't special.

Beef

The ubiquitous churros always make a nice if sparse dessert. A reasonable way to end dinner.

Churros

Spanish styled potatoes are interesting and tasted pretty good.  They don't look so stylish but I enjoyed them.

Snapshot
Lamaro's Bodega is a nice restaurant in Port Melbourne.  It has a certain elegance and style that seems best suited for the cooler months of the year.  I just think it's a bit dark (and maybe dreary) for my tastes.

Lamaro's Bodega tries a few new things as far as the menu goes and the food is generally good.  I like the place but wouldn't say it's exceptional.  There is some kind of X factor missing but is worth a visit if you live in the vicinity.
